If you’re lucky enough to already live in Catherine Park Estate, you’re no doubt living in a comfortable home with great surroundings, which helps make the winter months a little more manageable.
Recent events have shone a light on infection control and how germs spread. We’ve all learnt a lot about handwashing and keeping ourselves and our families safe this year, but there’s more to it than just cleanliness.
There are plenty of things you can do to stay healthy in winter and boost your immune system including eating well, exercising regularly, staying connected, and getting enough sleep.
Eating well is your best winter remedy
The nutritional goodness of fresh fruit and vegetables is important to keep you and your family healthy during the colder months. Try some hearty soups or a casserole in the slow cooker.
Foods that are high in Vitamin C are known to help keep your immune system strong to give you the best chance to stay healthy in winter. Citrus fruits such as oranges are high in Vitamin C, but did you know that broccoli, brussels sprouts, capsicum, and strawberries are also high in the Vitamin C and great for boosting your immune system?
If you’re struggling to get the recommended two serves of fruit and five serves of vegies each day or if your kids are fussy eaters, then try juicing them. Try a blend of carrot, beetroot, spinach, and lemon as a delicious combination that will boost your immune system.
Ensure your diet also includes plenty of lean meats, fish, poultry, low fat dairy, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Also, use lots of herbs and spices when preparing meals.
Sometimes a healthy diet alone is not enough though. Consider Vitamin C, Zinc, and Echinacea supplements that boost your immune system as great winter remedies. Obviously check with your healthcare professional first.
Keep exercising even in cooler weather
It’s very tempting to stay indoors when it’s cold outside, but to stay healthy you need to keep exercising. Catherine Park Estate has some great outdoor areas to use for walking, running, riding your bike, kicking a ball around, flying a kite, or doing a few push-ups. We even have an off-leash dog park, so bring your four-legged friend with you if you’d like. Whatever outdoor activity you enjoy doing, keep doing it through winter.
If the weather simply gets too harsh then try indoor exercise. Many have found that they can still keep up their regular gym sessions at home with minimal equipment and an online instructor.
Studies have shown that even a moderate level of regular exercise has a long-term cumulative effect on immune response and overall health.
Stay connected to stay healthy in winter
Staying connected with other people is essential for mental health, which in turn affects our physical health during winter.
Socialising can help strengthen your immune system by keeping you active and reducing your stress levels, so avoid the temptation to rug up on the couch all winter if you can. Keeping in touch with others is one of the best winter remedies, and it’s easy to do and usually very enjoyable.
Staying connected with friends and family can also be done without leaving home by using video conferencing, or even just a phone call. As restrictions continue to ease, we can also invite friends around to enjoy some hearty winter soups.
Get enough sleep
Getting the right amount of sleep is important year-round. However, it’s especially vital in winter because a lack of sleep can have a serious effect on your immune system, making you more vulnerable to cold and flu symptoms. Try and get into the habit of going to bed and getting up around the same time every day, even on weekends.
Create a relaxing routine that works best for you. This might include listening to soft music, taking a warm bath, or reading a book. Avoid screens just before bedtime and turn the lights down low an hour before bedtime to boost the release of melatonin in the brain, which promotes quality sleep.
